Module summary

This module provides the underpinning theory for diagnostic imaging of the musculoskeletal system, thorax & abdomen. Students are introduced to radiographic terminology and the skills that support safe radiographic technique.

Objectives

The aim of this module is plain film radiography of the musculo-skeletal system, thorax and abdomen. Essential skills such as communication skills, patient care skills, radiographic technique and interprofessional learning are also developed. The learning environment will be predictable, providing a familiarisation with radiography. There will be shared learning with students registered on Certificate of Higher Education in Diagnostic Imaging Studies.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module the students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a knowledge of radiographic terminology;
2. Demonstrate theoretical knowledge and principles for plain film radiography of the musculo - skeletal system;
3. Demonstrate theoretical knowledge and principles for plain film radiography of the thorax;
4. Demonstrate theoretical knowledge and principles for plain film radiography of the abdomen;
5. Understand the principles which support safe and effective diagnostic radiographic techniques.

Skills outcomes

This module provides the theoretical principles of diagnostic radiographic technique for plain film radiography and will act as a foundation for years 2 & 3.

The knowledge gained in this module will be further developed as the student moves through each year of study. The fundamental knowledge gained in this module will be further integrated into practice during clinical practice.

Syllabus

Students will cover the following areas:

Golden Rules of Radiography
Surface anatomy and radiographic terminology
Principles of the basic projections of the thorax
Principles of the basic projections of the lower limb
Principles of the basic projections of the upper limb & shoulder girdle
Principles of the basic projections of the vertebral column
Principles of the basic projections of the abdomen and pelvis
Patient perspective and experience of healthcare

Students’ knowledge and understanding will be supported by current textbooks, literature and current practice. They will be encouraged to reflect on their experiences on clinical placements to demonstrate their application of knowledge and understanding.

Private study

Time is allocated in the module hours for writing up and revising notes, visiting relevant websites, accessing electronic literature and library based study, and preparing for assessments.

Students are also tasked with a group presentation and independent study is allocated to facilitate opportunities to get together and work on their allocated topic.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Mock examination & feedback: Enables students to identify their knowledge & understanding as well as helping to identify their gaps in knowledge. The answers for the mock paper are discussed after the 1-hour mock exam where students discuss their answers and collectively create the answer plans to provide a useful revision resource.

Group presentation to develop the student’s team working, presentation skills and knowledge. The students will be able to search databases and research the literature to develop their information literacy and research skills.

Bank of typical exam questions: these are made available on Minerva as a revision aid and to help students test their own knowledge & understanding.

The exam will be in the form of an online open book examination. A mock exam will be held in week 29 semester 2.
